Best Links Courses in Scotland for First-Timers

Eleven Scottish links a first-time group can actually book, with who each suits, how to get on, and what the club charges in 2027.

The short answer

For a first trip, the best links courses in Scotland are the ones you can reliably book: Kingsbarns, Dumbarnie, Carnoustie, North Berwick, Gullane No. 1, Prestwick, Western Gailes, Royal Dornoch, Castle Stuart and Cruden Bay all sell visitor times ahead. Add the Old Course through its ballot or a package. Our travel partner can include any of them in a trip package. Check each course's handicap limit and visitor days before you fix dates.

This list of the best links courses in Scotland is for the trip captain planning a group's first Scottish golf trip. I chose courses for what a first-timer can actually book, not for a ranking: each one takes visitors, publishes its rules and has a 2027 green fee on the club's own site. For each course you'll find who it suits, how to get on, the visitor rules and the official fee, then a comparison table, a verdict and the famous names I left off, with the reason.

How I chose these courses

Every course here has a page on golftripbuilder.com with its checked visitor rules, and every green fee below comes from the club's own 2027 rate sheet, checked on 3 and 4 Nov 2026. You can see all the courses on the site. Three tests decided the list:

  • You can book it. The course sells visitor tee times in advance, or, for the Old Course, has a ballot and a package route that most groups can use.
  • The rules suit a mixed group. A published handicap limit a typical group can meet, and visitor days a week-long trip can work around.
  • It's real links golf. Coastal turf, walked rather than ridden.

The courses are grouped by region, because a first trip usually stays in one or two bases. Drive times in each block are from the first course listed.

Make Scotland's Links Part of Your Trip

Pick the courses and your dates, and the trip builder checks visitor days, handicap rules and drive times for every round.

These are well-known courses with pages on golftripbuilder.com. I left them off a first-timer list because of their visitor rules, not quality. Our travel partner can still include them in a trip package if your group fits the rules.

  • Muirfield takes visitors only on Tuesdays and Thursdays, with a handicap limit of 24. Its 2027 application windows closed in March 2026, so a 2027 round now depends on remaining package availability. See the Muirfield visitor rules.
  • Royal Troon has three visitor days a week (Monday, Tuesday, Thursday) between 12 April and 7 October, with a men's handicap limit of 20. See the Royal Troon course page.
  • Turnberry's Ailsa prices tee times by date and time, with no published rate card to give an official green fee, and it's the most expensive round in Scotland. See the Turnberry Ailsa page.

For a first trip with one base, make it Fife. Kingsbarns and Carnoustie give you two confirmed rounds, and you can try the Old Course ballot on the other days, outside 19 June to 19 July 2027. Add Dumbarnie for a third fixed round. Our travel partner can include all three in one trip package. Slots are limited, so booking early is advised.

For a mixed-handicap group, lean on Kingsbarns, Dumbarnie, Castle Stuart and Prestwick, which have the most relaxed handicap rules here, and check every player against the Old Course's 36, Carnoustie's 28 for men and North Berwick's 24 for men.

For Ayrshire, Prestwick and Western Gailes are about 15 minutes apart by road and both take visitors most days.

For a second base, East Lothian is the easiest add from Edinburgh. North Berwick suits a Monday to Thursday or a Sunday, and Gullane No. 1 fills the Friday or Saturday.

For a longer trip north, Royal Dornoch and Castle Stuart make a strong pair from Inverness, and Cruden Bay suits a group touring the northeast.

The Scotland green fees page on golftripbuilder.com lists every course's fees in one place, and the Fife golf guide has the rest of the county's courses. When you know your dates, build a Scotland links trip in the trip planner and it will check each course's visitor days against them.

Sources: each club's own published 2027 green fees and visitor information: St Andrews Links (Old Course), Kingsbarns Golf Links, Dumbarnie Links, Carnoustie Golf Links, North Berwick Golf Club, Gullane Golf Club, Prestwick Golf Club, Western Gailes Golf Club, Royal Dornoch Golf Club, Cabot Highlands (Castle Stuart) and Cruden Bay Golf Club. Checked 3–4 Nov 2026.

Scotland links FAQ

What are the best links courses in Scotland for a first trip?
For a first trip, pick courses you can book with confidence. Kingsbarns, Dumbarnie, Carnoustie, North Berwick, Gullane No. 1, Prestwick, Western Gailes, Royal Dornoch, Castle Stuart and Cruden Bay all sell visitor tee times in advance. The Old Course belongs on the list too, but most visitors get on through a ballot drawn two days ahead.
Which Scottish links courses don't need a handicap certificate?
Kingsbarns and Dumbarnie ask for no certificate, and Castle Stuart has no handicap minimum. Prestwick prefers a recognized handicap but welcomes regular golfers who know the etiquette and keep pace. The Old Course (36 maximum), Carnoustie (28 men, 36 women) and North Berwick (24 men, 36 women) all have published limits.
How far ahead should we book Scottish links tee times?
As soon as your dates are fixed. Kingsbarns opened 2027 tee times on 1 June 2026, and Royal Dornoch is taking 2027 requests by email in the order they arrive. Summer dates at the best-known links go first.
Can we play links golf in Scotland on a weekend?
Yes, but check each course. The Old Course is closed to visitors on Sundays, North Berwick takes no visitors on Fridays or Saturdays, Prestwick is members only on Saturdays, and Cruden Bay has only afternoon visitor times at weekends.
Do Scottish links courses have golf carts?
Mostly not. Links in Scotland are usually walked, often with a caddie. Kingsbarns, Prestwick and Royal Dornoch offer buggies only with a medical certificate, North Berwick has none, and Cruden Bay can't offer them even with a medical exemption because of the terrain.
Which famous Scottish links are hardest for first-timers to get on?
Muirfield takes visitors only on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and its 2027 application windows closed in March 2026. Royal Troon takes visitors on three days a week with a men's handicap limit of 20. The Old Course is mostly a ballot, and closed from 19 June to 19 July 2027 for The Open.
