About the course

Kingsbarns Golf Links is a par-72 links on the North Sea coast of Fife, about six miles southeast of St Andrews. It opened in July 2000, designed by American architect Kyle Phillips, and it measures 7,226 yds from the Black tees.

The sea is in view from almost every part of the course. The 6th is a drivable par 4 to a two-level green, with water beyond it. The 12th, the longest hole at 606 yds from the Black tees, ends at a green 65 yds long. At the 15th, a par 3 of 212 yds from the Black tees, the green sits on a rocky point that juts into the sea, and a tee shot that misses can finish on the beach. The approach to the 18th must carry a burn in front of the green.

Golf at Kingsbarns dates to 1793, when the Kingsbarns Golfing Society was recognized by its neighbors at Crail. The farmer ploughed up the links in 1850. Willie Auchterlonie laid out a new nine holes in 1922, but the land was mined for defense in World War II and went back to pasture. Construction of today's course began in 1997, with hundreds of thousands of tons of earth moved to shape it. The club says it was the first Scottish course built on links land in over 70 years.

Kingsbarns co-hosts the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship with the Old Course and Carnoustie, and it hosted the Women's British Open in 2017. No handicap certificate is needed, and the club asks groups to keep a pace of 4 hours 40. It suits a group that wants a modern championship links with sea views, a short drive from St Andrews.
