About the course
Dumbarnie Links is a par-72 links above Largo Bay in Fife, 12 miles from St Andrews. Clive Clark, a former Ryder Cup player, designed it, and it opened on May 29, 2020. It plays from about 5,300 to 6,900 yds, and a set of professional tees stretches it to 7,620.
Fourteen holes look out over the bay and the Firth of Forth. No two holes in a row head the same way, so the wind keeps changing as the round goes on. There are three potentially driveable par 4s and several risk-and-reward holes. The 1st looks gentle until you see the burn that cuts across in front of the green. The 6th, 8th and 9th play from raised tees down toward the water, and Links Magazine hears echoes of Royal Troon's Postage Stamp in the short par-3 8th. The short 17th climbs to a three-tiered green beyond a 300-year-old stone wall.
The course sits on the Balcarres Estate, which has been in the same family for more than 400 years. Golf journalist Malcolm Campbell, a Fife local, first saw a links here and hit the opening tee shot. Clark's team moved half a million cubic yards of earth to shape the dunes. A year after opening it hosted the 2021 Women's Scottish Open, won by Ryann O'Toole, and it was named the World's Best New Golf Course at the 2021 World Golf Awards.
The club says the course is designed to inspire rather than intimidate. No handicap certificate is needed, though the club prefers men up to 28 and women up to 45. The wide spread of tees lets a mixed group play the same course, so it suits a group that wants a modern links with sea views a short drive from St Andrews.
