About the course
The New Course is a par-71 links at St Andrews, 6,517 yds from the back tees. It sits on the same stretch of Fife coast as the Old Course, and St Andrews Links calls it "the oldest 'new' course in the world."
It's a sterner test from the tee than the Old, with gorse, heather and broken ground beside the fairways, and its greens are smaller. The 1st runs beside the Old Course, and a ball that lands there is not out of bounds. The 6th, the hardest hole on the card, has no bunkers at all. The 9th is a par 3 of 223 yds to a green set in a hollow, with a ridge short of it that turns away all but the best-struck shots. The 13th, the shortest hole at 147 yds, plays to a raised green that slopes down hard from the back. In places it doubles up on ground: the 12th shares a wide fairway with the 8th, and the 15th has a double green shared with the 3rd. The 18th green has ridges, so an approach to the wrong half leaves a hard putt.
Old Tom Morris, then Keeper of the Green, built the course in 1895. It was the second course at the Home of Golf, and it was named the New to tell it apart from its famous neighbor.
It suits a group spending a few days at St Andrews that wants a second classic links beside the Old Course. With gorse along the fairways and small greens, it rewards straight driving and accurate approaches.
Can we play it?
Yes, and usually on the day. The New Course is mainly walk-on: the starter beside the 1st tee issues the next free time. No handicap certificate is needed. Add it to your trip and Scotland Golf Tours requests the tee time for you.
Access
Visitor tee times from 09:36; earlier times are for St Andrews Links ticketholders. Times are issued in order and can't be held for later.
The catch
Walk-on means waiting at busy times, and you must be ready to play when called.
Our tip
Use it as your Old Course backup: if the ballot misses, the New Course is mainly walk-on, and its starter is a few steps from the Old Course 1st tee.
