About the course
The Jubilee Course is the third championship course at St Andrews Links, a par-72 links of 6,614 yds from the back tees. It runs along a narrow strip of links between the New Course and St Andrews Bay, and the Links Trust says many consider it the most challenging course on the Links.
The 3rd, The Skelp, is a par 5 with three bunkers waiting about 300 yards from the medal tee. The 6th, Playfair, is a par 5 with two doglegs and five bunkers around a shallow green that was once a par-3 green. Out of bounds runs down the left of the 10th. The 15th, Steel's Gem, is a short par 4: a drive that strays into the dunes or mounding on either side makes the green close to impossible to reach. The raised tees look out over St Andrews Bay.
The course opened on 22 June 1897, the public holiday for Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee, as a 12-hole course meant for ladies and beginners. It reached 18 holes around the turn of the century, and Willie Auchterlonie improved the layout in 1946. In 1988 Donald Steel rebuilt it to championship standard, and the 15th carries his name. Curtis Strange, the reigning US Open champion, hit the opening tee shot on the new course in 1989.
No handicap certificate is needed; at St Andrews only the Old Course asks for one. Visitor tee times start at 09:36. It suits a group of capable golfers who want a second hard links in St Andrews, starting from the same Links Clubhouse as the Old Course.
