About the course
Grantown-on-Spey Golf Club is a par-70 course of 5,710 yds on the edge of the Highland town of Grantown-on-Spey, in the Cairngorms National Park. It plays in three sets of six holes: flat parkland to start, then six holes through moderately hilly pine woods, then rolling parkland home, with views of the Cairngorm and Cromdale hills.
The 1st is a 287-yard par 4, so long hitters can go for the green. The 2nd, about 440 yds, is the longest par 4 and the second-hardest hole. The 6th is the only par 5, with water across the fairway. The 9th, Murdie's View, is a short par 4 played downhill. The 12th, the hardest hole on the card, doglegs right over the 11th green, and the 16th, at 140 yds, is the shortest hole and has six bunkers. At this length the course rewards accuracy more than power.
The club was founded in 1890 with nine holes laid out by A.C. Brown. Willie Park of Musselburgh extended it to 18 holes in 1911, and James Braid recommended improvements in 1921. Bobby Cruickshank was born in the town in 1894, learned the game on this course and caddied here as a teenager. In America he lost the 1923 U.S. Open to Bobby Jones in an 18-hole playoff, was runner-up again in 1932, and was the leading money winner in 1927. The club's Bobby Cruickshank Hickory Experience plays the original nine holes with hickory clubs, with his memorabilia to handle and a dram to finish.
It's a relaxed, shorter course that suits a group with mixed handicaps, or a day off the big links on a Highland trip. Boat of Garten is 15 minutes away and Spey Valley 25, and the three courses host the Speyside 54 Hole Open together each September.
Can we play it?
Yes, visitors are welcome. The club doesn't publish set visitor days or a handicap requirement. Add it to your trip and our travel partner requests the tee time for you.

Our tip
Grantown is about 15 minutes from Boat of Garten and 25 from Spey Valley, and the three share the Speyside 54 Hole Open each September.
