Can we play it?

Yes, visitors can play. A handicap is preferred but not essential. Add it to your trip and Scotland Golf Tours requests the tee time for you.

  • Access

Boat of Garten was founded in 1898 with six holes. James Braid designed the 18-hole course, which opened in 1932. It is a par 70 that mixes heathland and moorland, with firm fairways lined by birch, heather and broom. The course sits in the Cairngorms National Park, and the Strathspey steam railway runs alongside it. A deposit of one full green fee per tee time secures the booking. The club prefers golfers to hold a handicap, but it isn't required. Groups of 10 or more can ask for a group rate.

  • The catch

Cancel less than 14 days before your round and you get no refund. Delayed or cancelled flights and illness don't count as exceptions. Clubhouse catering also closes at 4pm on Mondays and Tuesdays.

  • Our tip

Boat of Garten sits just off the A9, between the Inverness courses and Gleneagles. It works well as a stop on the drive north or south. Castle Stuart and Nairn are both under an hour away. James Braid singled out the 12th, played through birch woods towards the mountains. Ask for caddies with your tee-time request, because the club has only a few.
