  • Access

Longniddry Golf Club was formed in 1921 on the south shore of the Firth of Forth, 18 miles east of Edinburgh. Harry S. Colt designed the course. James Braid advised in 1936, Philip Mackenzie Ross redesigned it in 1945 and Donald Steel later reworked the bunkering. The club calls it the closest seaside links to Edinburgh, and an unusual mix of woodland and links with sea views from many holes. It is a par 68 with no par 5s for men, but eight par 4s over 400 yards. It is a former Open qualifying course and hosted Scottish Open qualifying in 2018 and 2019. Longniddry station is under 20 minutes by train from Edinburgh Waverley, then a 10-minute walk.

  • The catch

Only drivers with a valid UK driving licence, aged 18 or over, can take a buggy, so most American visitors will walk. Cancellations or changes made less than 48 hours before play are not refunded, including for delayed or cancelled flights.

  • Our tip

Longniddry is the first of the East Lothian coast courses on the road out of Edinburgh, about 40 minutes from the airport. It works well as an arrival-day or last-day round, or alongside Gullane and Muirfield. The 13th green is just 80 yards from the clubhouse if you want a shorter round. Book caddies ahead, as they are pre-booked only.
